The role of the Senior Geotechnical Engineer will be to work closely with the engineering and operational teams on site to provide and implement sound engineering and rock mechanics principles that will ensure stability of stopes and excavations with minimal dilution and ground failure.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior Mine Engineer or Chief Mine Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer will have the following responsibilities:
Conduct routine inspections of all underground areas to evaluate geotechnical conditions
Investigate all incidents of ground falls or hazardous ground conditions and provide operations management with acceptable remediation or rehabilitation requirements
Complete in-depth numerical modeling assessments of existing and future mine designs to assess global geotechnical stability and hazards
Design and install geotechnical instrumentation, as required, to monitor stress changes/ground movements
Use monitoring data to alert operations and management to potential hazardous conditions and to calibrate geotechnical models
Work closely with the planning engineers to review and approve all development and stope extraction plans
Provide input to the daily, weekly, monthly and long-term planning processes
In consultation with the mine team, plan alternative methods of ore extraction, stope access and mining sequence, detailing the benefits and issues with each approach and make recommendations to the team
Update the annual Ground Control Management Plan
Update the annual Ground Control Risk Assessment for each mine
Work closely with the engineering and operational personnel to provide guidance on ground support, backfill and shotcrete requirements; this will include providing technical assistance for the purposes of quality control and quality assurance in these areas
Conduct periodic evaluations of the ground support standards and modify as required
Ensure that all operations and engineering personnel have been educated with respect to ground support standards and installation practices
Act as a liaison with government agencies and/or university research groups to: – Assist in the transfer of technology to the company – Propose research projects that could be engaged or sponsored by the company to improve safety or operations
Work with other company personnel and outside consultants to ensure the underground division’s geotechnical programs and policies are acceptable and effectual
Assist with underground mining studies, as necessary
Participate actively in training programs, personal improvement, and job improvement initiatives
Continually develop the ability, knowledge and skills necessary to keep up with the changing methods and technology in the job
Assist with special projects that arise within the planning and project teams
Perform other duties as requested
Qualifications
Must possess accreditation as a fully qualified Professional Mining or Geological Engineer in good standing and a minimum of 5 years of related work experience in an underground environment
Ability to function with minimal supervision
Strong communication skills
Strong computer skills are required. Excellent skills are required in the use of design programs, such as, Deswik, AutoCAD, Map3D and other geotechnical software. Experience in implementing and maintaining a seismic monitoring system will be considered an asset
Excellent organizational and time management skills are required. The ability to relate to both operations and engineering in a team approach is essential to success
Possess strong leadership skills and have initiative, as well as, be innovative and analytical
Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations

An EIT (Engineer-in-Training) or GIT (Geologist-in-Training) applicant with an objective to focus their career in rock mechanics and in the geotechnical field of mining will be strongly considered. Mentorship will be provided with the goal of growing this individual’s career path as a Geotechnical Engineer.
