Pan American co-developed a guinea pig breeding project in the Condebamba Valley of the Cajabamba Province, where our Shahuindo operation is located. Guinea pigs are an important nutritional source of protein, and is part of the local gastronomy in Peru.

The project goals include:

  • Strengthening the productive, organizational and commercial technical capacities of local guinea pig producers, aiming for 200 producers by 2023 and 500 by 2028, 75% of whom are women.
  • Improve the basic infrastructure to 100 sheds by 2023 and 500 sheds by 2028, generating approximately 1,500 permanent jobs.
  • Qualify producers to meet the international standards required for the marketing of guinea pigs.
  • Improve genetic line with the acquisition of breeding males from the National Agrarian University of La Molina.
  • Support the construction and certification of the primary guinea pig processing plant with the HACCP certification system and plant equipment.
