We are looking to hire a Senior Mine Engineer (Contract) to join our Bell Creek Mine team in Porcupine, ON., on a full-time basis.  The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 8 hrs/day or 4 on, 3 off, 10hrs/day. This is a contract position for 12-18 months.

Please note that this role requires relocation to the Timmins area and is not a camp-based position.


About the Opportunity

In this role, the Senior Mine Engineer will carry out and oversee engineering tasks in mine planning, ground control, ventilation, and coordinate tasks with operational personnel in support of achieving production schedules.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Senior Mine Engineer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Supervisor, train and mentor planners, EITs, mine technicians and coop students within the engineering department.
  • Oversee, coordinate and prepare engineering deliverables including short/medium/long term planning and scheduling, infrastructure and ventilation designs, geotechnical analyses and recommendations, reconciliations and reporting.
  • Develop, optimize and implement short and medium term mine plans to achieve budget and long term objectives in a safe and economic manner.
  • Coordinate mine planning work with that of geology, longhole, ground control, ventilation, survey and mine operators.
  • Work closely with the operating and technical groups to support optimum utilization of resources.
  • Facilitate weekly planning meetings, with key personnel, to coordinate activities in order to meet goals.
  • Assist in the development of the annual mine site budget and quarterly forecasts, with support from stakeholders.
  • Facilitate strategic long term mine planning sessions, with input from all stakeholders.
  • Participate in the compilation of month-end engineering reports and stope reconciliations.
  • Monitor compliance and ensure adherence to applicable engineering codes, regulations, safety and environmental practices, performance standards and specifications.
  • Troubleshoot problems that arise; analyze and recommend solutions so that mining will proceed according to plan.
  • In consultation with the mine team, evaluate alternative optimized methods of ore extraction, stope access and mining sequence, detailing the costs, benefits and issues with each approach and make recommendations to the team.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures in engineering.
  • Participate actively in training programs, personal improvement, and job improvement initiatives.
  • Continually develop the ability, knowledge and skills necessary to keep up with the changing methods and technology.
  • Assist and coordinate special projects that arise within the planning and projects teams.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

More About You

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • Must possess accreditation as a fully qualified Professional Engineer in good standing and a minimum of 6 to 8 years of related work experience after graduation.
  • Experience supervising other technical staff such as engineering professionals, EITs, technicians.
  • Strong leadership and initiative as well as innovative and analytical thinking.
  • Background in narrow-vein, long-hole and conventional mining methods is essential.
  • Experience with cemented rock fill (CRF) and paste fill would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with UG water management would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills are required including the ability to use and create excel spreadsheets and work with CAD and scheduling programs (Deswik, Amine, AutoCAD, EPS).
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Access, Project).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are required. The ability to relate to both operations and engineering in a team approach is essential to success.
